Job Search After 50

Are you having difficulties in your job search, and you are over 50?

We are no strangers to age discrimination. Age discrimination is prevalent in our society. Whether we are looking to buy a home or get a job. Let me take a few moments and talk about the Age Discrimination Act of 1967 (ADEA) – protects certain applicants and employees 40 years of age and older from discrimination based on age in hiring, promotion, discharge, compensation, or terms, conditions, or privileges of employment.  The ADEA is enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

The ADEA has been around since 1967. It was established to prohibit age discrimination in the workplace and promote the employment of older workers.

Here are just a few examples of why we have the ADEA.

  • Is appears that the affluent, older workers find themselves disadvantaged in their efforts to retain employment, and especially to regain employment when displaced for jobs.
  • Long-term unemployment in older workers results in deterioration of skill, morale, and employer acceptability is, relative to the younger workers.
  • Older workers are viewed as not being as skilled as the younger worker in our technological landscape.
  • Older workers are viewed as not being flexible, agile and all the other words that are used to describe our younger generations.

While coaching my clients, there are some common themes among them. A few of them are listed.

  • I am not getting interviews.
  • I interview with the hiring manager and never received an offer.
  • I updated my resume

Here are some tips:

  • Have you identified companies committed to hiring older workers?
  • Are you looking for clues in job postings?
  • Are you communicating the value you bring with clarity?
  • Do you know the red flags?
  • Are you quantifying and sharing relevant achievements for the position?

Are you having any of these concerns in your job search? If so, there are specific job search strategies when you’re over 50.  We want to coach you to your next opportunity. Visit our website or send an email to schedule a consultation.
