You saw your perfect position; you call your friends and coach to help you prepare your strategy for the position.
Your plan includes:
- Checking your LinkedIn and friends’ connections to the company and hiring manager
- Calling to schedule coaching sessions with your Coach to:
- Review your resume
- Conduct mock interviews
- Review your questions to ask the hiring manager
The phone screen with the recruiter goes well. Later you were notified that you are moving to the next step to meet with the hiring manager/team. Your interview with the hiring manager/team goes well. Overall, you feel good about the interview. Only to find out, “you didn’t get picked.”
You feel disappointed and begin to question everything you said or should have said, including your knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs). You debrief with your Coach to gain clarity. As your coach begins to ask you questions, you begin to realize that this is not your door and that something bigger and better is coming. And if you are a believer, you know this familiar scripture “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”
I know the ups and downs of searching for a job. I want to encourage you never to give up on yourself! Remember there are always inner workings within a company that you do not know or have access to. The company could change its job focus without letting you know. The position could be put on hold. There could be an internal person identified for the position.
You have been gifted with knowledge, skills, and abilities by God. He has equipped you for the right opportunity and the space to use your KSAs. And like the scripture says, He has plans to prosper and not harm you. God will never put you in a place that will cause you harm and deny your future.
I challenge you to use every phone screen and interview opportunity to enhance your KSAs. Walk in the room whether it’s virtual or in-person with a confident presence and be ready to brag on yourself! You want to be, “the right person in the right seat.”
Always remember 1) “nurture change based on truth which inspires, renews, and re-energizes with vision, potential, and opportunities, and 2) “not getting picked is sometimes you’re blessing.
